The film Sadie Thompson (1928) almost wasn’t made due to it’s subject matter. Censors wouldn’t even allow the word Rain, the original title of the W. Somerset Maugham best seller, to be see in any of the titles cards.
According to Gloria Swanson censors went over the film ‘with a fine tooth comb’ for swearing but lip readers can clearly see Gloria’s character swear numerous times in the film.
